NV Energy announced on 9 February that it will not build
its proposed 1,500 MW Ely Energy Center in eastern
Nevada due to “increasing environmental and economic
uncertainties.”
The company said it would only build the plant when
carbon capture and sequestration becomes commercially
“feasible,” which it predicts could happen “before the
end
of the next decade.”
The cancellation of the Nevada project is the latest in a
series of coal-plant cancellations around the US that
have stemmed from builders’ concerns about impending
regulations on carbon dioxide emissions.
On 11 February, Michigan utility company Consumers
Energy announced it was pushing back the start date of
its 800 MW coal plant. The state’s governor has put a hold
on plans for seven other similar plants.
On the same day, South Carolina’s governor came out
against a 1,320 MW coal-fi red power plant because of
projected extra costs for greenhouse gas and mercury
emissions.
In 2008, 13 proposed coal-fired power plants were
either cancelled or delayed due to similar concerns over
future carbon dioxide regulations, according to watchdog
Resource Media. The year before, 59 projects were
shelved.
NV Energy said it still plans to go ahead with building
